Text Watermarks

Text watermarks are the simplest way to protect your images and establish ownership. Add your name, brand, copyright notice, or any custom text.

Customization Options

  • Text content - Enter any text, including copyright symbol
  • Font family - Choose from a variety of fonts
  • Font size - Adjust relative to image size
  • Font weight - Light, regular, or bold
  • Text color - Any color, often white or black
  • Outline/stroke - Optional outline for better visibility

Tip: For versatility, use white text with a subtle black outline (or vice versa). This ensures readability on both light and dark backgrounds.

Image Watermarks

Use your logo or custom graphic as a watermark for a more professional appearance. Upload any PNG, JPEG, or SVG file.

  • PNG recommended - Supports transparency for clean overlay
  • SVG supported - Scales perfectly at any size
  • Sizing - Set as percentage of image width/height

For best results, use a logo with transparency (PNG with alpha channel). This allows the watermark to blend naturally with your images without a visible rectangular background.

Position Options

Choose where your watermark appears on the image:

PositionBest For
Bottom RightMost common, unobtrusive, professional standard
Bottom LeftAlternative corner position
Bottom CenterCentered branding, video-style credits
CenterMaximum protection, prevents easy cropping
Top cornersWhen bottom of image has important content

You can also set custom margin/padding to fine-tune the exact position relative to the image edges.

Opacity and Sizing

Opacity

Opacity controls how transparent or visible the watermark appears:

  • 100% - Fully opaque, maximum visibility
  • 50-70% - Semi-transparent, balanced protection
  • 20-40% - Subtle, unobtrusive branding

Lower opacity is more aesthetically pleasing but offers less protection. Higher opacity is more protective but can distract from the image content.

Sizing

Watermark size is typically set as a percentage of the image dimensions:

  • 5-10% - Small, subtle branding
  • 15-25% - Standard size, clearly visible
  • 30%+ - Large, prominent protection

Tile/Repeat Mode

Tile mode repeats the watermark across the entire image in a grid pattern. This provides maximum protection against cropping, as the watermark cannot be removed by simply cutting off edges.

Tile Settings

  • Spacing - Distance between repeated watermarks
  • Angle - Rotate the grid (45 degrees is common)
  • Offset rows - Stagger alternating rows for better coverage

Tiled watermarks work best with lower opacity (20-40%) to avoid overwhelming the image. They are commonly used for:

  • Preview images that will be replaced with unwatermarked versions after purchase
  • Proofs sent to clients for approval
  • Stock photography previews

Brand Protection Tips

Watermarks are part of a broader brand protection strategy. Here are some best practices:

  • Be consistent - Use the same watermark style across all your images for brand recognition.
  • Include copyright info - Format: name/company year (e.g., "John Smith Photography 2024").
  • Position strategically - Place watermarks where they cannot be easily cropped while not distracting from key content.
  • Balance visibility and aesthetics - A watermark that ruins the image defeats its purpose. Find the right balance.
  • Keep originals - Always keep unwatermarked originals stored safely. You may need them for prints or licensed uses.
  • Consider metadata - Also embed copyright information in image EXIF data for additional protection.

Remember that watermarks deter casual theft but cannot prevent determined infringers. They primarily establish ownership and make unauthorized use more obvious.
